Endeavor Supports GEW 2015 in More Than A Dozen Countries

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2015 took place November 16 – 20, with a number of activities in celebration of the innovators and leaders that are transforming economies and promoting ecosystems of entrepreneurship worldwide. Every year, over a dozen Endeavor offices around the world host or participate in events during the week, joining the movement of 160 countries and millions of participants. GEW works with supporting organizations like Endeavor every November to foster opportunities for collaboration, discussion and inspiration.

On social media, Endeavor Twitter handles globally promoted a campaign focused on female entrepreneurship in Latin America under the #EmprendedoraEndeavor banner. The initiative, made possible by the Ghose Foundation, aimed to highlight the stories of seven female entrepreneurs in the Endeavor network. Through a mix of short videos and vibrant visuals, Endeavor shared the stories of these inspirational women and their unique perspectives on life, business and entrepreneurship in Latin America. Below are highlights of Endeavor’s GEW activities in a selection of countries where the organization has an established and growing presence.



Endeavor Argentina participated in events in a number of cities across the country. In Buenos Aires, Endeavor hosted a panel that brought together entrepreneurs to discuss funding strategies and to share inspirational stories at the Metropolitan Center Design (CMD). In Córdoba, Endeavor supported an “Entrepreneur Day” to assist entrepreneurs-in-training. In Neuquén, Endeavor worked with the SME Centre to organize “Connect Neuquén”, a networking event for local entrepreneurs. Across Salta and Rosario, Endeavor was one of the main organizers for GEW, hosting a variety of workshops, clinics, conferences and trainings all week.



Endeavor Bulgaria partnered with the Association of Bulgarian Leaders and Entrepreneurs (ABLE) for the start-up challenge “Get in the Ring” as part of an international entrepreneurship forum that evaluates the most promising startups from more than 70 countries. Stefan Gugushev, managing partner at Gugushev & Partners Law Offices and Endeavor Bulgaria Board Member, served as  one of the four expert jury members in the competition to determine the national finalist. Additionally, Endeavor partnered with entrepreneurship organizations Start It Smart, GEM Bulgaria and StartUp Blagoevgrad to host special screenings of the movie “Crocodile in the Yangtze – The Alibaba Story” in two Bulgarian cities, followed by discussions on entrepreneurship.  



Endeavor Colombia led and motivated the entrepreneurship ecosystem across the country to coordinate and arrange events throughout GEW 2015. Endeavor Colombia’s work this year positioned the country as one of the most active participants during the week - more than 170,000 people attended events in Colombia in 2015, compared to the 100,000 that attended last year. There were more than 591 events and activities arranged in 20 regions and 51 cities.



This year, Endeavor Chile promoted and hosted several-large scale events across the country, including the Endeavor Experience Patagonia in the south of Chile. This event was one of the largest national events put on during GEW. The high-impact Endeavor Experience events are hosted by Endeavor's Latin American offices and seek to contribute to the development of the local entrepreneurial ecosystems through workshops, presentations, discussions, and more. These events aim to ensure that participants acquire the tools, experience, and networks necessary to take their businesses to the next level. Several events took place around the country in this GEW, including activities in Santiago, Concepción, Valparaíso, Frutillar, and La Serena.



As part of GEW, and in partnership with the GrEEK Campus Egypt, Endeavor Egypt screened “Crocodile in the Yangtze – The Alibaba Story” with Arabic subtitles for two consecutive nights to an audience of  almost 200 people. The documentary on the trials and tribulations of AliBaba.com’s early startup period received multiple honors and awards for its portrayal of entrepreneurship. The screening was free of charge and included a short Q&A discussion forum at the end moderated by an Endeavor Entrepreneur.



During GEW, Endeavor Jordan hosted a branded DealMakers event in Amman, which was positioned as an exclusive, engaging and fun annual investment match-making platform. This year, DealMakers 2015 brought MENA’s most promising entrepreneurs and top local, regional and international investors together to share ICT industry knowledge and connect for a day of expert-led workshops and speed-networking sessions.



Endeavor Lebanon and Beirut Digital District organized an event that was designed to introduce Lebanon’s leading corporations to its top entrepreneurs, building bonds that will boost the economy. The event was a series of meetings organized between top executives and entrepreneurs, focused on helping them grow their companies by developing key governance, human resources and strategy pillars. The event was branded as “IGNITE: Talent Meets Opportunity” and organized during GEW so entrepreneurs could connect with leaders to share their insights and further shape the next generation. The event was followed by a networking cocktail attended by the entrepreneurship community in Lebanon.



To promote GEW events nationally, Endeavor Mexico used the hashtag #GEWMX and gained up to a 134,000 estimated impressions reach during the week. Endeavor Mexico also organized several events, starting with the GITR2015 National Final. In collaboration with the CESSA University for Culinary Arts, Endeavor Entrepreneurs shared their experiences and acted as a jury evaluating each project in the “#ExpoIdeas” culinary contest. Endeavor Mexico also organized the “Business and Technology: A Look into the Future” panel in collaboration with UP University, covering topics like disruptive entrepreneurship, smart mobility and digital innovation. During the event, Mexico Managing Director Pilar Aguilar introduced the “#EmprendedoraEndeavor” campaign, promoting Endeavor's mission and several female entrepreneur success stories. On the final day of GEW, Endeavor Mexico also hosted a Q&A talk about the “Multiplier Effect” of Mexico City’s tech ecosystem.



Endeavor Miami hosted and participated in a series of events during GEW. A Breakfast Series with Venture Hive featured Endeavor Entrepreneurs Lionel Castro, Roger Duarte and Juan Damia as keynote speakers. The office also released its 2015 Impact Report during the week, highlighting Endeavor's growing presence in the U.S. and garnering press mentions in the Miami Herald. Miami board co-chair Adriana Cisneros and board member Matt Haggman participated in a Q&A sessions at BRAINFOOD - an entrepreneurship focused event series - with more than 75 participants. On November 18, Endeavor Miami Entrepreneurs were treated to an intimate luncheon and Q&A with IMPACT Award honorees Alexandra Wilkis Wilson (Gilt and GlamSquad) and Jim McKelvey (Square and LaunchCode). Subsequently, the Endeavor Miami Gala hosted more than 350 entrepreneurs, investors and business leaders at the New World Center to celebrate two years supporting the region's top entrepreneur, as well as to honor Wilson and McKelvey. 



Showing its support for various organizations that propel the regional ecosystem, Endeavor Peru participated in a number of events and entrepreneurship conferences this GEW. This included Start-Up Peru, an event that promoted innovative businesses and entrepreneurship in the country. Endeavor Peru was also represented at two entrepreneurship conferences: “CODE Juvenil” for Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería and “Top 100 Entrepreneurs," an event hosted by Cofide and Alta Ventures. For both keynotes, the subject of focus was on creating an “entrepreneurial mafia." Also, staff members from Endeavor Peru participated as a judge in a business project competition at IPAE School of Business and also at The Venture, the entrepreneurship program from Pernod Ricard. Furthermore, Endeavor Peru started its own forum titled "Inspiring Others" which showcased top executives and entrepreneurs. Alberto Yépez, MD at Trident Capital, joined Endeavor on the opportunity to discuss the concept of "Scaling Entrepreneurial Ventures."


Saudi Arabia

As part of an ongoing initiative to grow the local network, Endeavour KSA participated in the “Youth Business Exhibition and Forum” held in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The forum provides an opportunity to advance Saudi’s economic community and allow professionals to discover, learn and support the ventures of Saudi’s burgeoning entrepreneurs. Endeavour KSA held a spot in the forum and presented its initiatives, goals and vision for the high-impact entrepreneur community. The booth was visited by HRH Prince Saud bin Naif Al Saud, the Governor of Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. The event was also supported by HE Tawfiq Al Rabiah, Saudi’s Minister of Commerce and Industry. The three-day event was attended by a mix of senior officials, business leaders and aspiring entrepreneurs.  



Endeavor Spain's managing director, Adrián García-Aranyos, participated in the presentation of GEW in Madrid. The event took place at Fundación Rafael del Pino and it explored the situation of scale-ups and high-impact entrepreneurs in Spain. Adrián moderated a conversation between Ana Segurado, Endeavor Spain mentor and director of Open Future (Telefonica), and Marcos Alves, co-founder and CEO of @eltenedor. Endeavor Spain also screened "Crocodile in the Yangtze - The Alibaba Story” at the Google Campus in Madrid. Dozens of attendees enjoyed the film and had the opportunity to network with Endeavor Spain.


South Africa

During GEW, Citi Bank held a Town Hall event for their staff at their Sandton, Johannesburg, offices and featured Endeavor Excelerator entrepreneur Miles Kubheka from Vuyo's as the guest speaker. The event was in celebration of the work that Citi is doing with Endeavor through its Citi Foundation to promote and support entrepreneurship around the world. Citi has been a big supporter and key sponsor of the Excelerator program since 2013, which seeks to support disadvantaged startup entrepreneurs in the region. This event was Endeavor South Africa and Citi’s contribution to GEW locally, allowing the Excelerator team to strengthen relations with partners and creating better awareness for the initiative.



Turkey’s GEW campaign was anchored by at least one major event every day of the week. A visual marketing campaign on web and social media was targeted at sharing the experiences of entrepreneurs. Endeavor Turkey also took part in the Gong Ceremony and Press Conference hosted by the Istanbul Stock Exchange. Endeavor Turkey’s signature event this year was a nationwide and international collaboration on a free screening and discussion forum of the Alibaba documentary, “Crocodile on the Yangtze” with universities across the country. Former Alibaba Senior Executive and documentary producer Porter Erisman made the video available to all GEW countries for university-only use. Through this campaign, Endeavor Turkey reached out to more than 40 universities and 1,000 students.



Endeavor Uruguay participated in more than 50 events hosted by 31 organizations across the country with over 4,000 attendees. The office also hosted a conference called “Generaciones Emprendedoras” (Entrepreneur Generations) with over 250 participants that featured keynote speakers from “Generation Z," the “Millennial Generation," “Generation X” and the “Silent Generation.”
