Facebook Live Chat: GEN's Startup Open Competition

Entrepreneurs have the opportunity to take their business idea to the next level through the Global Entrepreneurship Network's startup competition Startup Open. Startup Open is a global competition that is open to entrepreneurs from any industry with a new business that has yet to raise any outside capital from angel investors, venture capital firms or other formal sources of seed funding.

The competition recognizes the most promising ventures from around the world– based on their growth potential, passion, creativity, level of idea development, and pitching skills.

In the Thursday, June 15 Facebook chat, Steven A. Rodriguez, GEN's startup community manager, talked eligibility and the application process for Startup Open, and the opportunity for the winner to attend the 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Istanbul, Turkey.

"Startup Open is really a competition to help anyone with any type of business idea get on the global stage," said Rodriguez. "We're looking to really help you think through your idea and help you get to the next level. Most of our questions are tailored to help you think through the actual business plan process, so anything that you might be weak in ... we're going to help you through some of the questions and some of the resources that we have."

Finalists for the 2017 Startup Open competition will also be eligible for GEN's exclusive program for entrepreneurs, GEN Starters Club -- a community of talented founders with access to support from GEN's expert mentors and networking opportunities with potential investors and collaborators. The winner will receive free travel and accommodations to the 2018 GEC.

"We highly believe in how do we fast-track entrepreneurs, and how do we help them make the right connections to get them to that next level?" Rodriguez said. "Many of the times these entrepreneurs have great ideas, they have great passion and drive -- what they're missing is just connections with the right people to help them, again, get to that next level. With the GEC, that's where we bring all of these entrepreneurial leaders, investors, entrepreneurial stakeholders in different communities, and we want to connect our entrepreneurs."

Completed applications are due by September 30. The finalists will receive feedback from investors and experienced entrepreneurs, and participate in the GEW People's Choice online voting during Global Entrepreneurship Week November 13-19, 2017.
