About the event

Crop farming is currently the second most important economic activity in the country, after livestock, with up to 20-25% of the population depending on it for their livelihoods. Crop agriculture is currently an underdeveloped and offers considerable potential, both in cereal and horticultural production. Each year our farmers produce many crops but find difficulties in finding their way to market. Since there was no centralized system that facilitates farmers to easily find market and buyers for their products, many times the crops get rot at the farms. It is also observed that there are hundreds of middle man who exploit between farmers and buyers making the process complicated and as a result farmers are discouraged to produce for large scale. Shaqodoon’s technology for development department have extensively carried out an assessment with the help of Spark to find a solution for farmer’s market engagement challenges.

The new market information system (farmer’s application) came out as the new way to farmer’s solution to market. Since the farmers are mostly illiterate people, the new platform is friendly and is going to be first mobile based market information system in Somaliland. It has three digit short code (315) that will connect them to market, buyers, today’s prices, agricultural product companies, agricultural experts for advice and ministry of agriculture for planning and development. It is worth mentioning that there are many farmers who received technical trainings on how to sell their products through the mobile based platform and are now familiar and appreciated it. We are willing to expand to the rest of regions before the end of the year.
