Gathering in Indonesia to examine innovative policies to stimulate entrepreneurial growth; policymakers from 70 countries to attend

WASHINGTON, DC – The Global Entrepreneurship Network announced that it would partner with the City of Surabaya to host the next Startup Nations Summit in Indonesia in November 2018. The summit gathers and connects policymakers and advisors to explore innovative regulatory changes and policy initiatives to help accelerate new firm formation and entrepreneurial growth around the world.

The announcement was made by Tri Rismaharini, mayor of Surabaya, at the conclusion of Startup Nations Summit 2017 in Tallinn, Estonia.

Rismaharini, named second runner-up by Fortune Magazine for World’s Best Mayor in 2015, is focused on turning the city of 3.5 million into a thriving hub for entrepreneurs. One of her initiatives, Start Surabaya, is the first city-level tech startup incubator in Indonesia focused on creative entrepreneurs in digital industries.

Startup Nations is an initiative run by the Global Entrepreneurship Network and funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation who will co-host the summit.

The announcement comes as GEN expands its efforts to help policymakers navigate a fast-changing environment for public policy and entrepreneurship. One of the primary functions of the Summit is to identify the most promising efforts to bring before a gathering of government ministers months later at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress. In addition to those gatherings, GEN has begun to roll out a series of policy panels and policy hackathons at all levels to facilitate broad knowledge sharing.

“Many government leaders have demonstrated a commitment to setting a policy environment that allows entrepreneurs to flourish,” said Jonathan Ortmans, president of the Global Entrepreneurship Network. “Startup Nations is our commitment to help them identify and implement policies and programs that can provide meaningful impact.”

Previously, the Startup Nations Summit has been held in Toronto (Canada), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Seoul (Korea), Monterrey (Mexico), Cork (Ireland) and Tallinn (Estonia). The 2018 Startup Nations Summit will be held in Surabaya November 2018.
